This is a photo of a native slim milkweed (Asclepias linearis) that emerges mostly in mid-May in our upper pastures. I have often seen monarchs nectaring from the tiny blossoms and some egg-laying on the buds & narrow leaves. The blooming slim milkweeds are a magnet for both monarchs and queen butterflies, as well as other butterflies, honeybees, and bumblebees. The main milkweed in our pastures is green milkweed (Asclepias viridis) which exists side-by-side with the slim milkweed. The slim milkweed plants have their areas of strength (seemingly the higher, drier areas). Slim milkweed represents about 3-4% of the total native milkweed in our meadows.
