Monarch Larva (FIRST sighted)
Sightings report image

Date: 06/15/2024

Number: 1

There may be more.

I had already collected six eggs to protect and use in an upcoming STEM Outreach event with native american youth at Red Butte Garden, and some of those have hatched, but this photo is the first egg I found on Tuesday (4 days ago), which I had left out - thought it was a little squat, so wondered if it was viable - and kept checking.

There might be others in the garden, but really the eggs were laid few & far between across my showy milkweed only.

I expect this indicates there is a good quantity of habitat now in the neighborhood - I have been watching the milkweed increase over the past few years.

Also, I have been trapping earwigs a bit, because they were haunting the milkweed during the day, and hopefully gutted the population sufficiently that some monarchs might make it to adult.
