Monarch Larva Sighted
Sightings report image

Date: 06/19/2024

Number: 2

Of the four larvae previously documented, all I found today is the third instar, which looks like it has molted to a fourth instar now. Watched it travel from one Milkweed plant to another Milkweed over a metre away, travelling through the lawn. The journey took over 24 minutes. It bypassed other similar sized plants before finally settling on one at the perimeter of the patch. Struck me that this is a very dangerous way to move about because it could’ve easily been stepped on. This left me with the lingering thought that perhaps I had stepped on one, if this is how they travel.
As evident in the photo I have attached, it looks like the chrysalis will not make it. Not sure if this is due to the extreme heat that we are having. Another 30+ degree day today with oppressive humidity. Temperatures are expected to stay the same for the remainder of this week.
