Monarch Egg (FIRST sighted)
Sightings report image

Date: 06/28/2024

Number: 1

I have been checking every leaf on every milkweed plant since May 15th, when I first spotted a Monarch in my neighbor's yard, and today June 28th I found the first Monarch egg on perennial milkweed, about 24" tall, not flowering, as it is a first-year plant in a patch of over 100 plants. I have five patches with about 300 plants total, and I checked about 90% of the leaves on the perennial milkweed, the annuals, and the butterfly weed, and no other eggs were found. I am still ecstatic about the find. I have four terrariums and rescue the eggs and rear them indoors until they eclose. This egg-find was one day later than in 2023. Although I left some outdoors to grow in the wild in 2023, I will be bringing all eggs in this year, that I find. With the loss of 59% of their population in 2023, I hope others will consider raising them in a terrarium to help their numbers rebound. With only a 5% survival rate in the wild, they need help to recover from last year's devastation.
