Monarch Larva (FIRST sighted)
Sightings report image

Date: 06/29/2024

Number: 10

All larva were approximately 1cm long. Saw 2 feeding on orange butterfly milkweed (Asclepias tuberosa) and ~8 feeding on swamp milkweed (Asclepias incarnata 'Rose', from https://www.highcountrygardens.com/product/perennial-plants/asclepias-incarnata). Nearby (3-5' away) whorled milkweed (Asclepias verticillata) did not appear to have any larva. Did not see unhatched eggs present on any of the milkweed plants regardless of species, but did not thoroughly search in order to avoid potentially disturbing eggs/larva. All milkweed plants were purchased and received within the past 20-60 days, so assuming the eggs were not already laid on the plants at the nursery. Have never seen monarchs in our yard at any stage of their life cycle. However, our neighbors ~500' to the southeast had monarch larva/chrysalises fenced off in their yard earlier in June.
