My husband always tells me not to worry in late Spring and very early Summer when most of our hummingbirds seem to be missing in action. With the exception of a few of our adult males, it had been exceptionally quiet until about a week or so ago. The hummingbird fledglings from the first nests of the season have been making their grand appearances and it's always such a tremendous treat! The sweet Mama birds are out and about a bit as well before they start their 2nd clutches of the season. I love seeing them! So many are very special to me as I met them when they were new little ones out of the nests as well. Hummingbirds youngsters are delightful! They are so curious and trusting and they adore learning all that is involved with being a humminbird. They check out each and every flower and many don't know or care to use a hummingbird feeder for awhile. They playfully chase one another and love to practice their aerial acrobatics. The adult males check them out too as they are eager to mate with the Mama birds a 2nd time. It's always hard to tell how many we have at this point as our yard has been divied up by the hummingbirds into separate habitats/territories based on different garden locations and such. We have lots of flowers (perennials, annuals, shrubs, trees) for them all around our property and add more every year. We adore having them here with us 7 months each year. We add hummingbird feeders as activity increases throughout the season and they are all strategically placed within separate gardens around the property. We currently have 8 feeders out, but will add four more or so over the next few weeks. By the middle of August or so, I would say we are at peak activity here and there are hummingbirds everywhere. This youngster in the photo has been enjoying one of the large gardens just outside of our kitchen. We spend a great amount of time out there and she/he is quickly becoming comfortable with me and approaches me every time I'm out there. We name nearly all of our hummingbirds and this one has been named Juniper.
