Hummingbird, Nectaring from Flowers
Sightings report image

Date: 07/22/2024

Number: 12

Hummingbird activity is getting closer to peak every day now in NC. Lots of juveniles zipping around chasing and playing, trying out all the flowers. They are becoming more confident each day and are working hard to establish their own mini territories around the different gardens and feeders. I've got 8 feeders up now and will add 2 more in a couple of days. They prefer the flowers during the day, but they all seem to like to tank up at the feeders first thing in the morning and right before bed. The adult males tire of the juveniles and find quiet perches for breaks from them. Through the years, I've learned what their favorite flowers are from experience and from other hummingbird enthusiasts. They all adore the various shrimp plants, as evidenced by the juvenile feeding in the photo.

**At our cabin in Laurel Springs, we are seeing at least 2 dozen Rubies zipping around flowers and 4 32 oz feeders. And that's a conservative estimate!
