Monarch Larva (FIRST sighted)
Sightings report image

Date: 07/26/2024

Number: 3

This photo of two of the three monarch larvae I spotted are on the common milkweed growing along my pond berm. Around 10 years ago, my husband and I planted over a thousand seeds on our sunny side berm. Only a few took, but now they have spread and every season I find a monarch caterpillar or more. I used to have to look for caterpillars in areas away from our property, but now I just walk to our pond to check the milkweed for larvae or eggs.

For two months, I have been looking for monarch butterflies and/or larvae on our property. This was my first sighting of larvae. So, a monarch adult was in the area a month or more ago. This was so exciting as I was worried that due to low population in Mexico last winter, I would not see any monarchs this summer.
