No Monarchs to report on today so I decided to do a Barn Swallow report. The only option to report under was first sighted. However, this is not my first sighting. I have been visiting this park since July 1. I have watched the parents fly in and out, feeding these babies. At one point, I counted five heads. Today I only counted four. The curious thing that I observed today was that there was a big fly flying around their nest and landing on the wood. All four little heads were watching it intently. One repositioned himself to be closer to where the fly kept landing and at one point when the fly landed close enough, he reached out and grabbed it.
Perhaps this is a sign that they are ready to fledge. I have seen them stretching their wings. This is my last day visiting this park until the second week of August. I anticipate by then that they will be gone. What a joy to have been able to witness this. I am grateful to the town of Oakville for putting up with a little poop and not removing the nest.
