Tremendous activity continues here! We're seeing at least 18 or so. They are literally everywhere. We have numerous gardens full of nectar producing flowers throughout front, back, and side yards, with 11 feeders spread out as well. Our adult males are still working hard to fend off all the motivated juveniles who are doing their best to claim territory/flowers/feeders. Adult females are nesting with their 2nd clutches of the season. Once all those babies fledge, it really is something around here. We'll have our adult males until early to mid September. Juveniles and adult females stagger their departures after the adult males. Our last juvenile doesn't usually leave until mid October and we always start seeing migrants passing through/ stopping for a pit stop towards the end of the month.
We had some wonderful, much needed rain a few days ago. It was so greatly appreciated. It appears that we have another day of so of temps in the 90s and then it looks like we'll go down into the 80s for a bit, which is also very welcomed.
Preferred flowers this year include Cuphea Vermillionaire, many different varieties of Salvia, Bee Balm, Major Wheeler's honeysuckle, Porterweed, Dicliptera, Lobelia, different varieties of Shrimp plant, Fuchsia Gartenmeister, Buddleia, Lantana, Verbena, Crocosmia, Tithonia, Zinnia, Canna Lilly, Mexican Petunia, Tourenia, Agastache, Trumpet Vine, Nasturtium, and 4 O'Clocks.
The photo is compliments of our good friend, Paul Nielson. He captured one of our juveniles feeding from the Cuphea Vermillionaire, which is definitely a hummingbird magnet.
