About a week ago we were sometimes seeing three adult monarchs in our back yard, but today we're seeing only two. They spend most of their time flitting around the yard and then landing on flowers to sip nectar. Their favourite nectar source in our yard is our meadow blazing star (Liatris ligulistylis). They also nectar from our Joe Pye weed (Eupatorium maculatum) and Buenos Aires verbena (Verbena bonariensis).
This is a poor year for us, because last summer we were seeing as many as 10 adult monarchs in our back yard at a time. We have 15 swamp milkweeds in our yard, and so far this summer we've seen only two monarch caterpillars on them -- far fewer than in any previous year.
