I noticed several common milkweeds about ½ mile south from the entrance to my driveway. I decided to investigate them. What caught my eye were the blooming flowers. The common milkweed growing along my pond berm are producing pods now. Our town did mow the road edges, so I suspect these milkweeds are second growth.
Since I did find 3 late stage monarch larvae munching on leaves of my milkweed and one adult laying an egg on my swamp milkweed during the Monarch Bliz, I hoped I would find caterpillars or eggs on the leaves of this patch. But I did not find any. I did see a couple of small round holes, with white sap edges, that looked characteristic to a newly emerged monarch caterpillar chew. Unfortunately, I could not find the tiny caterpillar, if there was one.
Along this ½ mile stretch of country road, up to my driveway, there are two more small areas of common milkweed. I checked these plants for monarch stages, with no luck. I'll keep checking.
