Monarch Adult Sighted
Sightings report image

Date: 07/31/2024

Number: 6

This monarch visited my Common Milkweed and mixed native plant garden on a hot, humid afternoon. She laid multiple eggs on a number of leaves, rested on top of the leaves, and fed from the milkweed blooms.

I've seen fewer monarchs this season than in the past two summers. I have seen several larvae at varying instar stages on the Common Milkweed in the garden from mid to late July. It seems that the monarchs prefer the Common Milkweed, although I've also got multiple milkweed plant varieties, including Swamp Milkweed, Butterfly Weed and Whorled Milkweed.

During this last week of July I've watched three 5th instar caterpillars leave their milkweed plants and move deeper into the mixed garden to form their chrysalids, usually on the large, sturdy Joe Pye Weed plants
