I just found nine, two eggs and seven early second instars on lawn mower zone Common milkweed offshoot sprouts.
These were the only eggs and caterpillars found after all summer of only having found one egg on May 23rd, reared to adulthood, a male, found on a three foot tall Common milkweed plant.
I brought these in before the day long rain and before the scheduled lawn mower crew. LOL!
The sprouts were about two inches to seven inches high. A week past the usual lawn mower day where I live.
I found one egg or caterpillar per sprout which were in the grass zone about a foot away from my row of full sized Common Milkweed and all the nectar flowers consisting of coneflower, cosmos, Mexican sunflowers, butterfly bush, black eyed susans, and newly budding Meadow Blazing Star. A vine of Blue Moon Wisteria had four blooms, freshly opening.
Go figure. Mamas still going after tiny milkweed this late in the summer. Temperature is 72 F, time is 10:30pm ( had a flashlight), wind is eight miles an hour with rain storms rolling in from the Northwest.
