Hummingbird Sighting
Sightings report image

This cute little fellow is one of many of our new juvenile Ruby throated hummingbirds born here this summer. He is from one of the first batches and has built up enough confidence to "claim" the large garden just out our back door off of our garden room. We have named him Matchbox. He has access to 3 feeders and dozens of hummingbird flowers. It's an ideal spot for a hummingbird. He perches on top of a very large Mock Orange shrub, about 12-15 fifteen high, and he spends his days defending his territory against numerous other hummingbirds who venture in and try to catch him off guard. He is quite comfortable with me and will perch just a few feet away. As you can see from the photo, the first flecks of the signature Ruby red are coming in on his gorget. As you can imagine, I'm quite fond of this little guy. And we have many, many others who visit and "chit chat" with us any time we are outside. They truly seem to enjoy interacting with us. It's phenomenal to experience.

*The photo is compliments of our dear friend, Paul Nielson, who spoils us by allowing us to see our precious jewels up close.
