Monarch Egg Sighted
Sightings report image

Date: 08/14/2024

Number: 1

I chose one as the number sighted but there have been countless eggs oviposited today, simultaneously at times, by two separate females; way too many to count. Photo taken immediately after the egg was oviposited on a tall Common Milkweed. She chose a leaf near the top of the plant. The same faded female is still busy ovipositing as I am writing this report. I would say roughly 60/40 for the percentage of tall versus tiny plants chosen as her location for ovipositing the eggs, with the majority being laid on tiny plants. It should be noted that one of the eggs I observed shortly after placement, appeared to be too transparent to be viable. I will try to check on it again tomorrow to observe its appearance then. I haven’t got down on my knees yet to examine the tiny plants but just from the action they have received today, it will be curious to see what happens when the larvae emerge. The plants are not big enough to sustain that many larvae.
