As I was weeding, I saw evidence of a (common/syriaca) milkweed plant having been eaten by a caterpillar. Almost all the leaves on the one plant had been eaten, right down to the stalk, leaving only leaf ribs and a bit of droppings - definitely caterpillar activity. I was surprised because I've seen no monarch eggs or caterpillars 'til now, this year. I left nearby milkweed plants undisturbed, just in case.
At least, this eaten milkweed plant is a hopeful sign.
