This is one of our adult males peering all around his feeder, making sure he is ready for any sneak attacks. Tremendous activity here with all the juveniles. At this point, the adult males and females are biding their time until they head south. They have lost all patience with the youngsters and give them a good verbal scolding whenever they reach their limits. It's been super hot here this week, with temps in the 90s. It's also been dry and we're all hoping for rain. Cooler temps are right around the corner. Our adult males are always the first to head out, in early to mid September. Adult females and juveniles from the first clutches follow in a week or so and juveniles from the 2nd clutches hang around until early to mid October. We see travelers until nearly November or so. We have plenty of flowers still going strong for the hummingbirds and other pollinators. Their favorites here include Cuphea Vermillionaire, many varieties of Salvia, Shrimp plants, Porterweed, Major Wheeler's honeysuckle, Tithonia, Fuchsia Gartenmeister, Buddleia, Tourenia, Jewelweed, Hibiscus, Rose of Sharon, Lantana, Zinnia, Dicliptera, Mexican Petunia, and Bee Balm. We currently have 11 feeders out and will keep those going until October. We'll go down to about 6 from October through November and we maintain 2 throughout the winter, as had a juvenile Rufous show up 2 years ago in October and he stayed with us until the end of March. This is when we start praying for safe travels for our little jewels! They are always missed and we love to see them come "home" every Spring.
