Monarch Larva Sighted
Sightings report image

Date: 08/29/2024

Number: 2

I selected this photo of one of the two monarch larvae I saw on 8/29 to include the habitat. Around 10 years ago, I planted thousands of common milkweed seeds one autumn day along our woodland pond berm. In the first spring, only a half dozen shoots came up on one end. From that humble beginning, the milkweed colony has been expanding and each year adult monarchs lay eggs on the leaves.

In July, I found 4 monarch larvae and reported my finds to Journey North's Blitz program. After that, I was not expecting to see many more. Still, I checked the milkweed as often as possible and was thrilled to find two more very well fed "cats" at this late date.
