this small male was nectaring on purple meadowsweet and yellow shrubby Potentilla at the entrance to Winslow branch of Bangor Savings Bank. the butterfly was only half size of a normal monarch - a real runt - but not a misididentified viceroy butterfly. we have seen runty male monarchs twice before, but do not know the cause of such small size.
