Monarch Fall Roost
Sightings report image

Date: 09/09/2024

Number: 16

Arrived Point Pelee National Park tip at approximately 18:45. No Monarchs seen in flight or nectaring. Wind from the West so I was not surprised to see zero Monarchs on the west side of the tip. I had previously checked Sparrow Field and there were no Monarchs nectaring there. Headed to the east side of the tip and was able to see 3 in flight. Watched one settle in interior forest almost in the same location as the one I saw yesterday; this one chose a Hop tree to roost. Made my way further along the east beach headed north, turning westward toward the 42nd parallel sign and Darlene’s bench. Noticed some activity over the tip washrooms and was able to locate a small roost of nine loosely gathered together on the eastern side, near the top of a Hackberry tree. If you zoom in closely on the attached photo, you can see three individuals (look for the triangle shape) hanging from a denuded branch. Subsequently was able locate 2 that chose an Oak tree near to where the shuttle parks when it is at the tip. Engaged in conversation with two other park visitors who indicated that they had seen 3 or 4 Monarchs roosting on the west side of the tip.
At 19:00 clear blue sky, Environment Canada conditions at Point Pelee: temperature 22°C, humidex 28°C, humidity 74%, dew point 18°C,
barometric pressure 101.7
Nearest wind reporting station at Harrow AAFC reporting winds WSW at 6 km/h
It should be noted that the Hackberry tree where the roost was seen is the same tree they roosted in the previous evening, September 8.
