Monarch, Captive-Reared
Sightings report image

Date: 09/17/2024

Number: 124

This report includes the 25 Monarchs I released at an earlier date.
Total released 124

I saw my 1st Monarch July 13, 2024 . I immediately checked for eggs and collected 11. I have Common and Swamp Milkweed in front and in the back of my garden. Almost all of the eggs I collected came off my Swamp Milkweed. I purchased a huge
Ageratum (Floss Flower) and placed it in a stand in front of our house by the sidewalk and within a couple of hours I had at least 3 Monarchs flying around. At times I had up to 8 that my husband counted. I occasionally saw a Hummingbird in the Mexican Sunflower along side the Monarchs. It was just amazing to watch. I bought some more Ageratums and got more Monarchs and more eggs. Every year I plant Mexican Sunflowers for the Monarchs. The Goldenrod I didn't have to plant since several years ago it just appeared and is thriving. I find the Monarchs really are not going to the Goldenrod but prefer the Mexican Sunflower and especially the Ageratum.

I also planted two Native (Prunus Serotina Trees a few years ago), commonly called black cherry and native to Southern Ontario, having read they attract Monarchs and lots of other insects. I did see the Monarch in the trees.

We live on a very busy Regional Road and even though we have a tremendous amount of construction going on as well as traffic, the Monarchs don't seem to be bothered by it at all. Sadly, I had to destroy 3 Monarchs due to OE.

My goal was to top last years. I almost made it.

I released 66 Females and 58 Males. The highlight this year was releasing 14 on one day. Loved every minute taking good care of my Monarchs.
