Monarch PEAK Migration
Sightings report image

Date: 09/21/2024

Number: 100

An amazing day, along with yesterday, deserves to be called Migration's Peak.
Saw about a dozen at "Standing Cedars" (yesterday's site)
The numbers were down a lot from Friday, but still significant, with a morning rain holding the monarchs from migrating........and the mild south wind not stopping their low level flights.
The most amazing part of the day (and of this migration perhaps) was that lilacs were blooming for a second time in this area, and one particular strip of lilacs held somewhere between 50 and 100 monarchs.
All afternoon and into the evening they fed, and I had hopes of roosting, but the temps stayed in the 70s and I couldn't find any clustering activity......
Tomorrow the winds will be out of the north 5-10 mph and temps only up in to the 60s so we will likely lose most of our monarchs.
We'll be hoping for even more moving down from the north into our area, but realistically, that isn't likely......
But we'll see.
Unbelievably gorgeous and unusual pictures and videos from today.....wish I could share them all, but I'll post one that actually shows 8 monarchs (if you can find them : )
