During fall migrations, I just cross our rural road to walk mowed trails in this huge field packed full with goldenrods and at least three species of asters. The air is deliciously scented from so many flowers in peak bloom, buzzing from bees collecting nectar and pollen is a welcome background sound, and a dragon fly or two are always seen on the hunt for insects, hopefully not monarchs.
Past seasons I would easily see more than a dozen monarchs searching and sipping nectar on sunny warm days. This September, I have had to search longer to find at least one monarch.
On 9/16, I was lucky, I saw three big beauties. I tried to net two, hoping to use a tag I had saved from last year's tagging for Monarch Watch. But, the day was warm and the butterflies were very energized, so I only had near catches.
