On this first day of Autumn, I decided to check the field across my rural road for monarchs. I had netted and tagged a male monarch on 9/20. (Report submitted) Because I had not seen many monarchs this season and because it was now late September, I did not expect to see any monarchs. But I still had hope.
As I walked the trail, I kept a look-out and was almost ready to give up when a big beautiful monarch, flying near, caught my eye. I wondered if it was the male that I recently tagged.
I waded into the field to get closer, abandoning my worry about ticks. And with binoculars, I confirmed, no tags on either side of the wings, so this was a new monarch sighting, a female.
The flowers in this field would surely fatten her up for the start of her long and dangerous journey to Mexico. I hope she finds more such fields as she travels southward.
