Monarch PEAK Migration
Sightings report image

Date: 09/27/2024

Number: 100

At last, monarchs in large numbers. The leading edge of peak migration? In my experience there is usually is a first wave around Sept 25-6 followed by one big day around October 5 and then they are gone.

After seeing about a dozen yesterday by sundown, got up early to count monarchs leaving from overnight roost in woods and the black willow.

Counted 70 flying between 7:24 am and about 9:30 with a 10 minute break at about 8:30. Most went south but a lot flew non-directionally. I tried not to duplicate in count.

When I left there were still probably 3 dozen visible in black willow. One cluster is photographed. There were 3 nectaring in the back garden when I went inside.

Photo is one of the clusters in the black willow. There were three main groups that I could see with a few others in 1's and 2's
