Sightings report image

Date: 09/29/2024

Number: 1

Around sunset, a juvenile or female ruby-throated hummingbird showed up in my garden, stopping for a very long drink at the feeder. (There are lots of flowers within 20 feet of the feeder that usually attract the hummingbirds. This bird seemed different in food preference and flight pattern from the one I was seeing up through this morning.) on the other arm of the shepherds hook, there's a butterfly feeder with a banana that has fruit flies on it. The hummingbird flew over to the butterfly feeder and appeared to be catching a dozen or so fruit flies. Then it flew back to the hummingbird feeder and took another very long drink. Several minutes later it returned and went through the same routine, but with less apparent luck catching fruit flies. Other hummingbirds have also appeared to catch fruit flies at my butterfly feeders, but they generally go to either the hummingbird feeder or the butterfly feeder, not to both. From the large amounts of sugar water and bugs that this little hummer was consuming, I suspect that it is a new arrival from further north and is very hungry.
