New England Aster Fuel Stop

For our area's latitude, 42.5, it is just past the peak migration for monarchs. Golden rods are fading fast now, but at least three different types of asters remain as beacons for late visiting monarchs, like this female beauty.

Even though I was not hopeful of seeing any monarchs, I knew there was a chance, based on Journey North reports about late sightings, so I took my camera when I walked the trails on this hill field. I'm sure glad I did.

At 12:15 PM, the sky was covered with thick grey clouds. A gentle breeze wafted the balmy 66.3 degrees F. air.

Seeing this monarch and the asters, turned my ordinary walk into a time to remember.
