Monarch PEAK Migration
Sightings report image

Date: 09/29/2024

Number: 59

Sitting on the balcony at National Yacht Club, attempting to watch my son race in a regatta using my binoculars. Although it was very hard to discern individual sailors, the Monarchs were very evident. I had noticed my first one as we turned onto Stadium Road at approximately 09:00. They were occasionally fluttering through the yacht club, maybe one every five minutes. I did not start my counting in earnest for another hour. Kept a tally by texting myself each time I saw one or more in my viewing area. Some were seen with a naked eye and others were detected using the binoculars. From my vantage point it looked like the furthest ones away were coming off the lake end of the Billie Bishop Toronto City Airport. All were flying in a generally south westerly direction roughly following the edge of the shoreline. Time of observation 09:00 until 14:20. Ones seen with the naked eye were coming through the parking lot out onto the lake and being carried along in the northeast wind. For a short time between approximately 12:10 and 12:40, the rate was one per minute. Mostly overcast conditions with some sunny breaks.
