What an unbelievable afternoon at Robert Moses Beach Field 5 and FINS. From 5 - 6:30 pm I spotted over 3000 monarchs mostly in roosts. There was one dead tree (photo) that the monarchs congregated in and completely covered the tree. Roosts were formed in pine trees and also on golden rod. Most roosts were at least 20 plus. Temps were in the low 60's with a moderate south west wind. Still an abundance of feeding sources for these hungry migrators. Night temps are hovering around 47-50 degrees.
Over 250 monarchs were reported by a friend at Jones Beach, around the same time. This is 15 miles west of my location. What a beautiful site to see.
