The volunteer head of the Butterfly program at the Botanical Garden of the Ozarks contacted me to say that there were the most monarchs she'd seen all year in the garden. (Her sighting from earlier in the afternoon is under "Monarch Adult Sighted."
I went to help tag at 3:00pm, and walking down a 60-foot path lined with lantana, zinnias, and tithonia, I counted 20 monarchs.
The volunteer head tagged 7 before I arrived.
I stayed in that area of the garden for 3 hours, and we tagged 34 more, stopping only because it was getting dark. There were still untagged butterflies in the garden. They were flying into the trees and roosting for the night; I spotted 3 in one tree, but it got dark before I could see how many were in the trees.
