Arrived to the tip area of Point Pelee National Park at approximately 18:10 (approximately 50 minutes before sunset.) Weather conditions according to the weather app on my phone at 17:58: partly sunny, 10°C with a windchill of 5°C, north wind 355° at 20 km/h with gusts up to 32 km/h, humidity 68%, dewpoint 5°C, barometric pressure 102 kPa and rising
Wasn’t anticipating seeing any Monarchs as the weather in Southwestern Ontario has been rainy, windy and cool. Some areas have had frost warnings. I expect any Monarchs out there will be hunkered down. Did a thorough search of the tip area; the west path, the east Beach and the interior tip area in the more sheltered areas where the wind was low and where Monarchs have roosted before. Also checked the shuttle loop and tip bathroom areas. The east beach was the least likely as there was a lot of surf and wind on the east side. You can see in the attached photograph that the wave action has caused the tip to disappear.
Sunny conditions expected later in the week, so there is still the chance for more activity.
