Notes: Monday, October 7th, 2024, I was outside the Connelly Aerospace Building at Texas State Technical College. I was outside for about ten minutes, and I saw the monarch butterfly in the attached photo nectaring on some flowers. The monarch was female, and it looked to be fairly fresh out of chrysalis.
I returned to the locality where I had seen these butterflies at 11:07 am and saw a monarch butterfly that looked similar to the one in the photo. I believe it could have been the same insect. An american lady butterfly was also nectaring in the area and I saw the american lady and the monarch chase each other in flight once, the encounter lasting about thirty seconds. Other than that, they just nectared and tried to stay away from me as I tried to photograph them. I left after ten minutes and when I came back at 1pm the insects were gone. End of report.
