Both adults have been spotted daily since 12/17, frequently together. Consistently seen flying around our fig and native loquat trees. Warm weather has pushed temps back into the high 60F range during the day/low 50F overnight.
Previously unobserved behaviors
12/17 Significant leaf fall occurred with a slight breeze. I watched one of the monarchs chasing American sweetgum leaves toward the ground as they fell. The monarch would chase a leaf toward the ground and then fly back up to the lower branches. This behavior lasted a few minutes.
12/19. One monarch was observed chasing a black-capped chickadee out of our backyard. Monarch flew along the path of the bird until it was out of range and then resumed its normal flight behavior.
