Monarch Larva Sighted
Sightings report image

Date: 12/28/2024

Number: 3

One caterpillar in its 5th instar was in a yellow milkweed (Asclepias tuberosa) plant that had unexpectedly grown in the garden.

Two caterpillars where on my native narrow leaf milkweed plant (Asclepias fascicularis) that I grow in containers each year in the garden.

I have never seen caterpillars this late here in the Bay Area on my milkweed plants. The plants fortunately still have stems and a few leaves for all the caterpillars to have enough food to get to their chrysalis phase.

We have a few monarchs that overwinter in the trees in back of the house each year. There are Eucalyptus trees and other species of trees that they take shelter in.
