It was a very hot day (high 80's), sunny, and breezy. I came home in the late afternoon and observed three female monarchs seeking milkweed and egg-laying. I also saw one male monarch flying around and nectaring on false garlic flowers & pink thistles.
The female monarchs were very diligently looking for milkweed which is still somewhat scarce, but more is emerging daily. Twice two of them got within a couple feet of each other, which caused them to have small air-tussles (no contact) and then both came down and continued their low-fluttering focused searching at a nice distance from each other. I also observed the females nectaring at times from blackberry blossoms near the milkweed patches.
This is a photo of one of the lovely females laying an egg on a young milkweed (Asclepias viridis).
