Monarch Adult Sighted
Sightings report image

Date: 03/18/2025

Number: 8

I observed at least 8 individual monarchs today (5 females, 3 males). The females were milkweed-seeking, egg-laying, and sometimes nectaring. The males were sailing around checking milkweed areas and nectaring. The main nectar plants continue to be false garlic flowers, wild blackberry blossoms, and pink & yellow thistles.

It was a sunny day, with temps in the 70's, humidity above 50%, with extremely strong winds 20mph (and above) from the S.

In the late afternoon I spotted a flying mated pair and was able to get a photo when they finally landed on a tree branch ~ the strong gusting wind was a challenge for them. I will add a Monarch (OTHER Observations) report about this pair. This was the second mated pair I have seen this season (the first was on March 16th).

This is a photo of a lovely, diligent monarch as she lays an egg on the stem of a young milkweed (Asclepias viridis). She laid other eggs on this plant and also on other milkweed nearby.
