This was a bright, sunny day with temps around 72 degrees F, 30% humidity, and winds 12mph from the S. I saw a lot of monarch activity and a couple more monarchs than yesterday.
Unfortunately, during the night we had freezing temperatures of 30 degrees F for many hours. This caused damage to the young milkweed plants. I am estimating that half of the milkweed has some freeze-damage and that about 15% will not recover. Most of the milkweed plants I looked at had monarch eggs on them.
(I will add a Milkweed report about this.)
So this was a sad day seeing formerly healthy milkweed drooping and leaves darkened/withered. My only good news was that so many monarchs were here carrying on.
This is one of the lovely female monarchs seen today as she nectars from a low-lying blackberry blossom.
