Our first tulips emerged in the afternoon on Friday, 3/21.
We are part of the SPPS (Saint Paul Public Schools) Tulip Test Garden Participatory Science cohort. We planted 1,000 red emperor tulips at 19 school sites with over 800 students across Saint Paul with the help of Ramsey County Master Gardeners last October. We're wondering if the Urban Heat Island Effect could change the timing of our tulips - when they emerge and when they bloom. We are comparing our Urban tulip gardens to the ex-urban tulip garden at Belwin Outdoor Science, located in Afton MN. So far 10 urban tulip gardens have emerged, and Belwin's ex-urban garden has not! Science is fun!"
