Today was a bright, sunny day in the 70's, with humidity around 45%, and light breezes from the S. I observed at least 12 individual monarchs with many more encounters as I walked outside and into the meadows.
The monarchs sailed around on the soft breezes and nectared from thistles and other wildflowers (now including flowering milkweed). The males patrolled milkweed and nectar patches, while the females went about looking for milkweed, resting, and egg-laying ~ sometimes taking a quick nectar break.
Twice today I had mated pairs flutter past me. In the first case they ended up in an elm tree in our front yard, so I was able to get photos. In the second case they flew over some tall trees and I lost where they went.
This is a photo of one of the lovely monarch females laying an egg on a fresh milkweed (Asclepias viridis) at noon today.
