At 12 noon it was 77 degrees F, sunny, with 59% humidity, and strong winds from the S. I observed at least nine individual monarchs as I went about the meadows. They were flying, nectaring, & resting ~ some of the females milkweed-seeking and egg-laying.
I was following a particular female as she was milkweed-seeking, when she chose to nectar from a lone yellow thistle that was next to the milkweed plants. As she sipped nectar for a few brief moments, a male monarch sailed by and captured her. This is a photo of them in the grass as a mated pair. After about ten minutes they lifted up together and flew high into the foliage of the nearby woods.
This is the 11th mated pair I have seen since the first pair on March 16. I feel lucky each time I manage to see a mated pair (even luckier if I can get a photo!). It always happens fast, and then they are usually hidden or fly to trees and impossible to spot unless you know they are there.
