We did not SEE a Ruby-throated Hummingbird. But, we HEARD a hummingbird buzzing past of us when we stand a few feet from my Japanese Quince in my back yard. My Japanese Quince was full of flower buds (and started to open the next morning). Japanese Quince is the earliest flowering plant that hummers feed from in Michigan that I have witnessed (also orioles love them). This is 3 weeks earlier that I usually record hummers to this location. Hummers migration precedes blossoming of food flowers in Michigan. They are associated with sapsucker drill holes (and artificial feeders). I put my hummer feeders immediately. I get many hummers May-October.
