Saint Anthony Park Elementary, SPPS
We are part of the SPPS (Saint Paul Public Schools) Tulip Test Garden Participatory Science cohort. We planted 1,000 red emperor tulips at 19 school sites with over 800 students across Saint Paul with the help of Ramsey County Master Gardeners last October. We're wondering if the Urban Heat Island Effect could change the timing of our tulips - when they emerge and when they bloom. We are comparing our Urban tulip gardens to the ex-urban tulip garden at Belwin Outdoor Science, located in Afton MN. So far this year the urban tulip gardens emerged 3 weeks earlier, on average, than Belwin's tulip gardens - due to the Urban Heat Island Effect. Also, as of right now, 4 urban tulip gardens have bloomed, and Belwin's garden has not!
Science is fun!
