It was a cloudy day, around 80 degrees F, 60% humidity, with wind 15 mph from the SE. I did a monarch egg & larvae count today. A few times during the count light raindrops came down.
I saw four monarchs flying around. The prairie plantains (Arnoglossum plantagineum) are just beginning to bloom and they are a monarch favorite. Other butterflies, beetles, bees and more are also drawn to them. The monarch males were patrolling them and the nearby milkweed patches.
This is one of the monarchs as he sips from the tiny golden flowers of this prairie plantain.
