Unusually warm temperatures beginning on February 23 (day after ice fishing derby!) caused open areas to slowly expand to about 50% open. Then, south winds on March 12th -13th blew the remaining ice apart on the night of the Blood Moon. Wind caused the remaining ice to disappear quickly from monitoring transects on evening of March 13, which was about 2 weeks earlier than average.
