I have been looking since mid-May when we spotted our first male but never saw any eggs. Saw this first stage “cat” this afternoon after seeing another monarch earlier today a block away. Saw some chewed leaves which made me investigate the entire stem when I happened to see this little one.
Searched common milkweed and other butterfly weeds beyond this one and no other eggs or instars were located. Checked all two dozen plants/clusters we have in various parts of our yard. Last two days have been in the 80’s here and will drop below seasonal norms to mid 60’s and then mid 70’s later this week.
