Found evidence of first instars on eight different Common Milkweed plants in the same patch I reported on last week. Was only able to locate four individuals, each on its own plant. The one visible in the photograph was actually being attacked by ants when I found him. I scared the ants away. Not sure if he will make it. I Suspect that might be what happened to the ones on the plants where I found evidence of eating but no caterpillars. Happily, I was able to locate a first instar on the plant that I submitted in my egg report from last week. All evidence of instars was found on the top of the plants on the smallest newly emerged leaves. Hypothesising that the closeness of these leaves and how tightly they are together, helps to provide protection?
