Today we joined a "Butterfly Hike," coordinated by Centre Outdoors, along the Butterfly Trail at Bald Eagle State Park. We spotted our first Monarch Butterfly, flying sort of southwest, while we were all still getting organized in the parking lot a little before 11:00 AM. The second Monarch Butterfly we saw briefly fluttered about while we were paused at our first stop along the trail, during which our guides described how the next area we were about to enter had been control-burned earlier in March. That area was now fully regrown with numerous plants (e.g., goldenrods) in bloom.
Unfortunately, other than many of the "usual" little white and yellow butterflies, the only other butterfly we saw during this "Butterfly Hike" was likely a swallowtail or possibly an admiral butterfly. Both for this one, and the two Monarchs already mentioned, none landed or stuck around long enough to get a photograph. Nonetheless, the hike was very informative and well worth the time.
During the hike, the air temperature developed from about 75°F at 11:00 AM to about 80°F at about 12:30 PM, the dew point hovered around 57°F, the humidity dropped from about 53% to about 42%, the air was calm with the pressure slowly dropping from 28.92 inches to 28.90 inches under fair skies.
