Milkweeds at Bald Eagle

Today we joined a "Butterfly Hike," coordinated by Centred Outdoors, along the Butterfly Trail at Pennsylvania's Bald Eagle State Park.  We spotted two Monarch Butterflies during the hike, but neither landed long enough to get a photograph.  You can see our report for those sightings here.

You might figure that if there are Monarch Butterflies fluttering about the park, there is likely to be some Milkweed as well.  As you can see in the included photograph, there are indeed some Common Milkweed plants in Bald Eagle State Park.  We did not see any extensive fields "full" of Milkweeds.  Rather, there are clumps of maybe a dozen or more scattered about in the park.  Granted, our butterfly hike lasted about 90 minutes, and we covered less than two miles in the process.  In contrast, Bald Eagle State Park encompasses nearly 6,000 acres, so there could be vast fields of Milkweed elsewhere in the park.  The Common Milkweeds shown in my included photo are examples of what I mean by "clumps" of Milkweeds.  These two photos were taken across the road from the Park Office after we completed the "Butterfly Hike."

At the time, the air temperature was about 80°F, the dew point was 57°F, the humidity was about 40%, the air was calm under fair skies with the air pressure being 28.90 inches and slowly dropping.
