Monarch Fall Roost
Sightings report image

Date: 09/05/2025

Number: 256

Arrived approximately 19:15 to Sparrow Field area near the tip of Point Pelee National Park. There was fluttering in the trees on the opposite side of the road to where I had earlier found Monarchs nectaring on Mexican Sunflowers. I was able to observe 17 individuals roosting over the tip road with an eastern exposure. The biggest group was 9. I cycled further down and made contact with the group participating in the evening Monarch hike. They showed me some of the roosts they were able to find. These roosts also had mostly eastern exposure but were further down in the trees, once again over the road in the area of the shuttle stop. Another roost observed with an eastern exposure near the tip washrooms. I made my way to the East Beach where I had observed Monarchs earlier in the day. Before it got too dark for me to observe anymore, I was able to locate 23 Monarchs. The smallest groupings were of 2. The largest grouping was 7, illustrated in the photo above. Some were 3 m up in the trees, others were at waist height, all with eastern exposure.
Roosts observed on Hackberry, Mulberry and a Chestnut-like tree I was not able to positively identify.
It was mostly sunny. Conditions recorded at the Point Pelee weather station according to the weather app on my phone at 19:00:
20°C with a feels like temperature of 16°C
Winds West 26 km/h gusting to 43 km/h
Humidity 59% dewpoint 11°C
Barometric pressure 101 kPa and rising
The number reported above is the official count for Point Pelee.
